The Fiber Universe is two friends that are fulfilling a dream to own a yarn store. Erin Gierszewski has been knitting and crocheting since college, and has recently learned how to spin. Melinda Breede has been knitting and crocheting since childhood, spins, and has recently discovered a passion for circular sock knitting machines. Do you need some help finding New Year’s Resolutions that you will stick to? Challenge yourself to learn new techniques, work on different kind of projects, and have fun with The Fiber Universe’s Around the Universe Challenge. We have four different categories to choose from – Knitting Techniques, Crochet Techniques, Spinning, and Projects. Each category has twelve goals to attain, and you have the entire year to complete the challenge. To help you master these techniques, we are offering a monthly knit-a-long which will complete at least one technique and one project.

When you complete all twelve challenges in a category, bring your completed game card to TFU to receive a prize and be entered for the Grand Prize Drawing!

Beginning Knitting

Learn everything you need to know to get started on your first project, including how to cast-on, knit, and purl. Class materials purchased at the store are 10% off day of the class.

Beginning Spinning
by arrangement

Use one of our wheels to learn the basics of spinning! Materials will be provided.

2-At-A-Time Sock Class

In this class you will learn 2 different cast-on’s, both 2-at-a-time. You will learn toe-up and top-down, either on 2 circular needles or magic loop. Please bring 2 balls of sock weight yarn and needles in sock sizes. If you want to try magic loop, you will need at least a 40″ cable. 2 circular needles can be any length.

This is a great first cable project. Feel free to get started on the brim, but with size 11 needles, this project goes quickly! Please bring needles and 100g of worsted weight yarn.

Drop Spindle Spinning Class

Have you always wanted to learn to spin? Come try Drop-Spindling with Kari! No experience needed. You will be provided with a top-whorl drop spindle to keep, and some fiber to get you started. Kari will also bring her drop spindle collection and demonstrate her spinning greatness.


Spinning Art Yarn

Start day 1 of le Tour de Fleece with an Art Yarn class! Please bring a wheel (or let us know if you need to use one of ours) in good working order, and at least one bobbin of already spun singles. You will need empty bobbins and lazy kate. We will cover Add-in’s and plying techniques. Handouts and some materials provided.
