It has been more than 85 years since the roots of Easter Seals were planted in Central Illinois. What started as a once-a-week clinic in a downtown storefront in Peoria for just a few children, has blossomed into four service centers serving thousands of children and adults with disabilities and their families every year.
Widely recognized as a place of hope and progress, Easter Seals provides a broad array of programs, services, and facilities serving people with disabilities of all ages in central Illinois.
Easter Seals provides services for children and adults with developmental delays and disabilities. Services are designed to improve functional as well as life skills.
Thank you for spending time with us.
A Family of Services
Our innovative programs, state-of-the-art facilities, and highly trained staff deliver results for the individuals we serve, and their families. Easter Seals maintains an outcome measurement system in all areas of direct program service provision and communicates results on a regular basis to its staff, board of directors, and other stakeholders. In FY 2011, 94% of the children we served made developmental progress and Easter Seal recorded 96% satisfaction among families and 97% among referral sources.
Eddie Garber and Stephanie Polka We make a difference in the lives of thousands of people with special needs each year—teaching new skills, building confidence and pride, and giving new hope for the future. Our mission is to provide exceptional services to ensure that people with disabilities and their families have equal opportunity to live, learn, work and play in their communities.
All treatment and intervention services at Easter Seals are based on functional outcomes rather than delays or specific diagnoses. Functional outcomes are clear statements about "real-life" skills that are written in family-friendly language and reflect the changes that families want to see for their children and themselves. They are designed to maximize a child's practical skills (movement, feeding, dressing, communications, etc.) and his/her participation in family and community activities. They provide a clear focus and direction for all our interventions.
The staff at Easter Seals will help you identify your priorities for intervention, and guide you in creating the most appropriated functional outcomes for you child and family. These are determined by your concerns and the treatment team's assessment of your child's skills. The outcomes derived from these priorities are specific to your child's needs. These outcomes will then help us determine which type of therapists will be included on the treatment team, the frequency and intensity of services, and the location of services. We will also communicate with schools and other community providers regarding your child's outcomes to make certain that your child's treatment is comprehensive and coordinated.
Easter Seals Ambassador Family Easter Seals recognizes that families are the first and best lifelong teachers of their children. Therefore, a family's participation in the therapeutic process is both essential and critical. Children will make minimal gains if the only intervention is provided in the therapy session. To ensure that your child has the best chance of meeting his/her outcomes, our therapists will provide you with specifics "home program" of activities to be carried out during daily routines on a regular basis. The therapist will monitor your child's progress, and change your home program as your child improves.
Easter Seals provides treatment and interventions that are guided by established practices, based on the best scientific information available, as well as new and promising alternatives. While we emphasize treatments that are based on scientific research, we also try to stay on the "cutting edge" of less proven treatment options and support those options that we feel are safe and may be helpful.

The characteristic behaviors of autism may or may not be visible in infancy (18 to 24 months), but usually become obvious during early childhood (24 months to six years). Research indicates that early diagnosis is associated with dramatically better outcomes.

Information about cerebral palsy
What is Cerebral Palsy?
The term Cerebral Palsy (CP) refers to any one of a number of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination, but don’t worsen over time. Even though cerebral palsy affects muscle movement, it isn’t caused by problems in the muscles or nerves. It is caused by abnormalities in parts of the brain that control muscle movements. The majority of children with cerebral palsy are born with it, though it may not be detected until months or years later. Other children develop cerebral palsy later in life following a stroke, trauma or infection.
Cerebral Palsy occurs in two or three children out of 1,000. It’s a lifelong condition. People do not grow out of CP, but most improve with time and treatment. The two main symptoms of CP are stiffness and poor control of movement. It can affect one part of the body, such as a single arm or leg, or the entire body. Some people experience just stiffness or poor control of movement, while others experience both.
Because CP is the result of impaired brain function, most people have problems in other developmental areas in addition to the problems with movement. These additional problems can be mild or severe and may include language delays, learning disabilities, mental retardation, visual or hearing impairment, ADHD, and seizures. Only 25 percent of people with CP have problems only with their motor skills.
How is it treated?
Therapists, working with children and their parents, help children adjust to their problems with movement and posture, so that they develop skills like walking, climbing stairs, running, feeding themselves, and getting dressed. They can also help children with more advanced skills such as riding a bike or playing sports like soccer or softball. These activities may appear awkward, but the emphasis is on the child being as functional and independent as possible. Children then gain confidence in their abilities, and know that they can participate in any activity along with other children their age.
